Despite losing a nail-biter in game seven of the NBA finals this season, the Boston Celtics have reason to celebrate. The team's social media efforts have prompted a jump in fan participation and resulting customer insight.

As of June 2010, the Celtics had 900,000 Facebook followers. This time a year ago it was only at 250,000 followers. The team also has 60,000 Twitter followers, which has tripled over the past year.

Matt Griffin, senior director of sales and marketing for the Boston Celtics, says the team has made a concerted effort this past season to attack social media in as many ways as possible and it has been successful for the organization. But before diving into social media, the team asked its fans what they wanted.
