Show and Tell Motivates Employees

Dave Duffield, the well-known beloved boss at former software company PeopleSoft, known for his camaraderie with his employees, became somewhat of a phenomenon for building a highly regarded employee culture ripe for fostering information sharing and fresh ideas. So it was my pleasure to have the opportunity to recently interview the former head of what was once the second largest software company in the world, at the RightNow user conference.

Not letting any grass grow beneath his feet, Duffield launched Workday last year, a human capital management on-demand solution company. He maintains the importance of letting employees' voices be heard and empowering workers, which he said can greatly impact an organization if structured correctly. “[At PeopleSoft] I learned that the value system was important. The way we identified our values and beliefs was if employees were taught and we attracted and motivated the right people, then they built phenomenal products for you.”

One example of how he achieves this at Workday is by holding a show and tell on Thursday afternoons. From developers to human resources folks, employees show off what they’ve been working on. The process not only fosters collaboration and information sharing, but it builds employees’ self esteem as well.

The show and tell is one way that Duffield is building up his new culture. In fact, he says that culture defines a company. “There are a lot of good companies with cultures that I wouldn’t want to be a part of. It’s a phenomenon,” he said.
