WYFMA: What’s Your Favorite Marketing Acronym?

There’s no escaping the dreaded, yet often useful, acronym. CRM, ERP, ASAP, and on and on. There are countless broad acronyms, like the ever-present bank ATM; and there are myriad industry-specific acronyms, like, well, the high-tech ATM (asynchronous transfer mode). But that’s not enough. No, no.

There are also occupation-specific acronyms. Take the “customer strategist” (marketing, sales, service execs), for example. We have CRM, CEM (customer experience management), CMR (customer managed relationships), and so much more.

Then there are team-specific acronyms. Pete Winemiller (a 1to1 Customer Champion and Editorial Advisory Board member), gave me the idea for this post by talking about a colleague who created the acronym TIP-OFF for a weekly team meeting (though, we’re not sure what TIP-OFF stands for). Winemiller, vice president of guest relations for Seattle’s Sonics and Storm, also talked about another associate (though not a coworker) who invented then quickly gave up on the perhaps unwise acronym SLAP, created as a “motivator” for a ticket sales team.

So you know this is leading to a question, right? I mean, hey, it’s Friday. Let’s have a bit of fun.

What is your favorite marketing, sales, service, or team acronym? Similarly, what’s the worst one you’ve come across?

Kristen,
Indeed, TIP-OFF is a great name for a team meeting. In the case above, it actually stands for something specific, but Pete couldn't recall the exact full name.

A TIP-OFF is either a piece of confidential, advance, or inside information and is a basketball term for the beginning of a game or to resume play after a jump ball call. So it is a good acronym for a team meeting.

I came across a new one today at the Sage Software Insights partner conference, courtesy of president and CEO Sue Swenson: OFI or opportunities for improvement -- as in, "We need to examine our OFIs to continually deliver a better customer experience."
