The Star of Delta’s Safety Video Creates Viral Marketing Craze

When Katherine Lee, the 33-year-old red-haired, blue-eye beauty, beat out 82 other Delta flight attendants to star in the airline's new safety video that will be shown on all aircraft next month, she probably didn't realize that she'd become an instant star. And Delta, maybe inadvertently, got itself a vibrant viral marketing campaign as a result.

But that's exactly what has happened since Delta posted the new video on its blog in February. Delta asked passengers to watch the video and "tell us what you think." and they did!

Because of her high cheek bones, a playful wag of the finger when telling people that smoking is not allowed, and her resemblance to Angelina Jolie (earning her the nickname "Deltalina"), the video became a hit and then moved to YouTube.

Today, the video has received 331,000 downloads on YouTube and pages of comments and also is being discussed in major news outlets like CNN and Fox News, as well as among social travel forums.

Deltalina's beauty is the obvious cause for the buzz, but she also proves how one unique and arresting idea leveraged strategically in a social media outlet can cause a positive stir for a brand and lend itself to free publicity for a company.

As for how Lee is handling being recognized when she travels around the world? She recently quipped, "I feel like a rock star."
