Women Rule!
Lately, I’ve been feeling like I have social media fatigue. Every time I open my inbox, there’s another invitation from a friend or colleague to join a community. In the last two weeks alone, I received invitations to Plaxo, Twitter, Reunion.com, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Chickswhoclick.
While, I may be suffering from information overload, it’s not surprising. Apparently, the reason I’m so popular among social sites is because I’m a woman. According to a new study by Rapleaf, a provider of search services that find information about people on the social web, women tend to have more friends on social networks.
The study, which sampled more than 30 million people across various social networks, revealed that of the people with at least one friend, 53.7 percent are female and 46.43 percent are male. A sample of the results include:
Of people with 1-100 friends, women have on average 62 friends and men have on average 57 friends. Of the people with 100-1,000 friends, women average 185 friends and men average 172 friends. And of the people who maintain 1,000 and 10,000 friends, women have an average of 1,837 friends and men have 1,944 friends.
What does this mean? Auren Hoffman, CEO of Rapleaf, says that male audiences will be seen as less valuable than female ones because women make more purchasing decisions than men and word-of-mouth about purchases is more likely spread by women.
So for people like me who seem to get bogged down with social invitations, remember that meaningful engagement with new technology does require some expenditure of time and energy. If you're willing to do this then you’re like to see big benefits.
