Are Your Employees Smiling?

It seems like a no-brainer: When people feel good about their jobs and are happy at work, their happiness is reflected in the quality of their work, resulting in greater productivity and ultimately happy customers.

By creating conditions under which employees feel happy about their work typically results in superior job performance, good health, and other positive work behaviors. Unfortunately, some companies still don't understand this equation.

My friend Marci, who works at a large national travel agency, told me the other day that not only are she and her coworkers prohibited from visiting any websites during their work day, they're not even allowed to speak to one another! I was stunned. Not only are the employees absolutely miserable and bored there, but how can the company expect to foster a free-flow of ideas?

It's a shame this company is so hindered. Motivated employees correlate to peak performance. Take Zappos, for example. Tony Hsieh is the CEO celebrated for his innovative style for motivating employees. For instance, he has implemented free lunches, a life coach for employees, a nap room, and free massages. As a result, employees are happy, there's little overturn, and sales topped $1 billion last year.

It's simple and Hsieh gets it: "Happy employees are more productive employees," Hsieh told CBS recently.
