Sweetening the Deal in a Sour Situation
You can estimate a restaurant's popularity by the line of people waiting for a table during the Sunday brunch rush, and when it comes to Sylvester's Restaurant in Northampton, MA, the proof is in the potatoes. But, no matter one's reputation for superior service and fantastic food, the occasional mishap is unavoidable.
This past Sunday, a group of friends and I headed to Sylvester's for our semi-traditional brunch outing. (That is, we often stuff our faces full of French toast when I come to visit.) We got a table rather quickly, but once we ordered, service suddenly slowed to a snail's pace. Just as we were growing antsy, our waitress came over to apologize. Our order slip had done just that--slipped. The kitchen had lost our order, but was quickly scrambling to get our eggs and bacon on our plates and in our stomachs.
Though we were growing restless, our waitress sweetened the situation with her apologetic demeanor and two free bowls of fruit! Filled with cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, and pineapple chunks, apple and strawberry slices, and blueberries, we had plenty to snack on before the main course arrived. The meal itself was delightful (as always). And then, just as we were preparing to leave, our waitress returned with a list of cookies. She asked everyone to pick their favorite from the list and, in a flash, she returned with a giant cookie for each of us!
Sylvester's took it upon themselves to treat us like royalty, thus counteracting one unfortunate incident with an apology that went above and beyond anything we could've ever anticipated. They say the way to someone's heart is through their stomach, and after all they did for us, we love them even more than we did before.
